Being interviewed by Kay is, as we all know, like being interviewed by a backward child. That's great most of the time. But occasionally she will throw you a curveball like a child might – "Why is there war?" "What is Europe?" – and if you can't answer it's you who ends up looking like the thick-as-pigshit chancer.~ Malcolm Tucker, The Missing DoSAC Files

Kay Burley is a rather dense Sky News reporter, best known for trying to ape Jeremy Paxman's confrontational interview style and failing at it dismally, either because she's completely unprepared for her interview or because she's made a father cry about how much he misses his kid. In 2010 Chris Bryant called her a "bit dim", which was a kind understatement, considering.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Kay was brought up in Beech Hill, Wigan, Greater Manchester.

Career[edit | edit source]

Journalistic Career[edit | edit source]

Her first reporting job was at the Wigan Evening Post and Chronicle in Wigan at the age of 17.

She worked for the BBC initially from 1985 until Andrew Neil recruited her for a show that would eventually become Sky News. She covers everything from politics, to tragic events happening around the world, to Sky News's Christmas news. She also sometimes writes for the Sunday Mirror and works at LBCRadio sometimes too.

Kay is most well known for not being a particularly good reporter and either making things up or not understanding what she has already been told. The Independent has a run down of some of her "best" moments here.

In November 2015 Kay was sent to report on the recent terrorist attacks in Paris. While there, she saw a dog and thought it looked sad so tweeted about it. Everyone decided that taking the piss out of her was a much more reasonable reaction than rage given the recent events. The jury is still out on whether this was a genius move to help lighten the mood of nations across the planet or just a stupid, ill-conceived tweet which highlights how little she thinks of people compared to animals.

She also once interviewed Bill Oddie by slipping in as many Taylor Swift quotes as she could[1] because she is a proper journalist.

9/9/2010 Kay makes a fool of herself over phone hacking Kay: Do you have evidence to support your claim that phone hacking was endemic not only at News of the World but at other newspapers? Pretty strong claim to make if you don't.
Chris Bryant: The information commissioner produced a report, which if you'd listened to the debate earlier or you'd read that report you'd see he refers to more than a thousand cases in various different newspapers, something like eight hundred instances in the Mail alone.
Kay: So you are in a position to have listened to that debate and have read that report; as a result you are content to say that on telly.
Bryant: ...
Bryant: I have just said it. You seem to be a bit dim, if you don't mind my saying so.

Fiction-writing Career[edit | edit source]

No clue which Prime Minister Kay's self-insert was sleeping with...

When not busy trying to be a real news presenter, Kay publishes what is basically explicit lolitics fanfiction. Her first book, First Ladies, published in 2011, is a 400 page self-insert Mary-Sue E rated story set in the busy world of government media relations, in particular the romantic and erotic setting that is television news broadcasting. The story revolves around Isla McGovern, a red-haired, green-eyed young “exquisite”, “astonishingly pretty”, “gorgeous”, “pretty little thing”[2] who sometimes works as a TV news reporter and has a lot of sex with people she shouldn't, like the Prime Minister. There isn't much of a plot other than that.

"He smiled at the memory of her slowly pouring champagne into a Waterford Crystal flute in his bedroom ... she'd mischievously dribbled the contents of the glass onto the most eager parts of his anatomy. Leaning forward she had taken him to the very edge of control before lying back again and allowing herself to succumb to his meticulous attention."~ From First Ladies by Kay Burley[3]

Although most people didn't really like the book, First Ladies did have its fans - allegedly including one Peter Mandelson[4]. Kay released a second book but since her first was so bad no one bothered to buy it.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Kay is twice divorced and has one son from a one-year marriage to Steve Kutner, a football agent of Frank Lampard.
