Alistair Darling is a Labour Party politician who was most notable for serving as Chancellor under Gordon Brown and through the economic crisis. He was one of only three ministers to serve continually throughout New Labour's thirteen years in power.
Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Alistair was born in London but grew up in Scotland. His grandfather, Sir William Darling, was Tory MP. As a young man, he identified as a Trotskyist and supported the International Marxist Group, before swiftly giving up far-left politics and joining the Labour Party aged 23.
Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]
Early Political Career[edit | edit source]
Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]
For most of his political career, Alistair identified as a moderate, non-tribal Brownite, passing between Treasury jobs while Gordon remained as Chancellor. He described his happiest years in government as being when he worked as Chief Secretary to the Treasury. When Gordon became Prime Minister in 2007, he was unsurprisingly appointed as Chancellor. Alistair stood down at the 2015 general election.
