My own civil partner.~ David Cameron about Nick Clegg[1]
In 2010 the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats formed a coalition government and their leaders got gay-married in the Downing Street Rose Garden.
Support[edit | edit source]
The general election of 2010 produced a hung parliament. Since no one party had an overall majority, it wasn't clear who would form a government. David Cameron believed that the and the Liberal Democrats could work something out, leading to him giving the following speech:
It took a while, but eventually the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives formed a coalition government and thus a ship was born. David welcomed Nick to Downing Street following the formation of the coalition for a quick photoshoot. There was much touching.
The two gave a joint press conference together in the Downing Street Rose Garden shortly after.
David Cameron was more than happy to play up to the narrative of the two as a couple on a number of occasions.
Sir David, I was trying to think of something we had in common, and I think it is perhaps that we’ve both had a film made about our lives. Yours was of course the very successful Frost/Nixon, and mine of course was Brokeback Mountain. I’d actually like to share this with Nick Clegg.~ Cameron at the GQ Awards, 7th September 2010
I can’t believe that someone middle class, from the Home Counties, could get together with someone so wealthy whose family own a string of mansions.~ Cameron at the Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year Awards, 17th November 2010
As someone who has recently got into bed with an ardent Europhile, I should perhaps ask my right hon. Friend’s advice about how to hold the relationship together over a long period of time.~ Cameron in the House of Commons, 25th May 2010

In the Media[edit | edit source]
The media used to ship it really, really hard and spearheaded the narratives of the coalition as a marriage.
Newspapers[edit | edit source]
Below is a collection of front pages from around the time of the creation of the coalition:
TV[edit | edit source]
Channel 5 even created their own fanvid for the ship in Dave and Nick: Where Did It All Go Right?
There was yet more shippiness and slashy undertones in dramatisations such as Coalition.
The Meme[edit | edit source]
The early days of the meme were dominated by Clameron. The ship has become increasingly AU-focused as their real life relationship has deteriorated.
