A quote about or by the person. It doesn't matter if you can't find one, just leave it blank. ~ The source, if known
Best known for Brexit and heading up a UK Cabinet level department with a defined end date. Also fought against David Cameron for the leadership of the Labour Party.
Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
David was born to a single mother, Betty Brown, in York and was initially brought up by his grandparents there. His grandfather was the son of a wealthy trawlerman but was disinherited after joining the Communist Party; he led a 'hunger march' to London shortly after the more famous Jarrow March, which did not allow Communists to participate. When his mother married a Polish-Jewish printworker the family upped sticks and moved to London, where they lived initially in a flat in a "slum" in Wandsworth before moving to a council estate in Tooting, London.
Although he got into Bec Grammar School in Tooting, David's A Level results weren't good enough to get him into university, so he vecame an insurance clerk and member of the TA. He saved up enough money to retake his exams and won a place at Warwich to study computer science in the 1960s. He then went on to get a masters at the London Business School and studied at Harvard for a management qualification.
Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]
He worked for 17 years at Tate & Lyle.
Early Political Career[edit | edit source]
David was an active member of the Federation of Conservative Students and became their chairman in 1973. It was through these connections that he ended up being elected to Parliament in 1987.
Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]
David held a few high profile posts but since his party were in opposition for most of the time he has been in parliament he hasn't been near power for a great deal of time.
2005 Conservative Party Leadership Election[edit | edit source]
David stood against David for the Conservative Party leadership election in 2005. David lost to David but the most embarrassing part of the campaign was when Davis's fans came out in t-shirts which read "It's DD for me". Did I forget to mention these fans were women with breasts?
Brexit Minister[edit | edit source]
Following Theresa May becoming Prime Minister, Davis was appointed Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union on 13 July 2016. This caused a lot of confusion as no one knew that May rated David particularly highly or that he would be up for a government job, having told David Cameron to sod off when he was asked to be a minister in the coalition government.
Full List of Appointments |

Every job they've ever held as an MP or Lord, from a lowly PPS to Prime Minister. You don't have to include committees, but you should include committee chairmanships. For modern MPs this information can be easily gathered from The Public Whip, but doing so is about as exciting as watching paint dry, so if you don't feel like it just leave the table for someone to fill in later.
If they've only ever been a backbencher, you can delete the table. • Job 1 Title (Start date [day] [month], [year] - End date [day] [month], [year]) |
• Job 2 Title (Start date [day] [month], [year] - End date [day] [month], [year]) |
• Etc |
Not everyone has great moments, but if they do, you can link to videos of them in the table below:
