The United Kingdom, is one of the few countries in the European Union that does not need to bury its 20th century history~ Liam Fox[1], who then went and TV and denied he ever tweeted it while sitting in front of a giant picture of the tweet

I'm actually quite liberal when it comes to sexual matters. I just don't want the gays flaunting it in front of me, which is what they would do~ Liam Fox c.1984

Best known for his close friendship with Adam Werritty, twitter blunders and somehow still having a career.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Liam was born in East Kilbridge, Scotland in a council house which is parents later bought. He was taught at the local school and went on to study medicine at the University of Glasgow.

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

He went on to be a GP and a civilian army medical officer as well as a division surgeon with the St John's ambulance.

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

While at university, Liam was a member of the Conservative Association and stood as a local councilor in 1984[2]. While at uni, Liam resigned his position on the university's Students Representative Council in protest at the council passing a motion condemning the decision of the Glasgow University Union not to allow a gay students' society to join the union.[3].

Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]

Liam failed to get elected in 1987 in Scotland but was successful in 1992 when he stood for Woodspring.

1992-1997[edit | edit source]

Liam quickly rose up the ranks of the Parliamentary Conservative Party, starting out as a PPS to Michael Howard until he became a senior government whip.

His rise was halted when the Conservative government lost power in 1997.

In Opposition[edit | edit source]

Fox had a varied career in Opposition - he was bumped up to a front bench spokesman and eventually to Shadow Secretary of Sate for Health in 1999. He was Michael Howard's campaign manager after the no confidence vote in Iain Duncan Smith in 2003 which had the upside of getting him promoted to Shadow Foreign Secretary.

After David Cameron won the Conservative Party leadership election in 2005, Adam was made Shadow Defence Secretary.

Cameron Government[edit | edit source]

When Cameron become Prime Minister in the coalition government, Adam was not moved out in favour of a Lib Dem, in part to keep the social conservative's on Cameron's side and also because there was no way that Cameron was going to give such a big job to the minority party in coalition.

Liam wasn't very popular in his department because he wanted to reduce overall spending by more than 8% and within a year had announced over 11,000 redundancies in the armed forced.

When Cameron proposed upping the aid budget to 0.7% of GDP, Liam was very angry because all that tonnes of extra money could have been spent on his department. He wrote a letter to the Prime Minister telling him so - and the letter got leaked. This was the second letter of his criticizing the Prime Minister that got leaked and for a while David Cameron, his inner circle and the press in general thought Liam might try and mount a party coup and force Cameron from office.

That didn't happen in the end as on 14 October 2011 Liam was forced to resign over the Adam Werritty scandal as detailed below.

He also voted against same-sex marriage when he was a backbencher so there's that. While on the backbenches he was pretty unremarkable, trying to brand himself as an elder statesman with gravitas and huge amounts of experience but people mostly just kept laughing at him because of all the scandals.

May Government[edit | edit source]

Despite his incredibly dodgy past[4], Theresa May made him Secretary of State for International Trade[5]. His main task is to secure trade deals after Brexit which was going so well until he insulted everyone.

This country is not the free-trading nation it once was. We have become too lazy, and too fat on our successes in previous generations. Companies who could be contributing to our national prosperity - but choose not to because it might be too difficult or too time-consuming or because they can't play golf on a Friday afternoon - we've got to be saying to them if you want to share in the prosperity of our country you have a duty to contribute to the prosperity of our country.~ Liam Fox, trying to persuade the word to trade with the UK

Leadership elections[edit | edit source]

Adam ran for leader of the Conservative Party in both 2005[6] and 2016[7]. He did not win either. In the 2016 election he was the first to be eliminate at the ballot with just 4.9% of the votes in the first round.

Scandals[edit | edit source]

Expenses[edit | edit source]

During the 2009 expenses scandal, Adam was found to have the largest over-claim by anyone in the Shadow Cabinet. He

Adam Werritty[edit | edit source]

On 14 October 2011 Fox resigned from his office as Secretary of State for Defence, for breaking the ministerial code by letting Adam Werritty into defence meetings. He also had to pay back £3,000 for letter Adam live rent-free in his taxpayer funded second home[8]

Twitter[edit | edit source]

Liam doesn't think before he tweets and has no idea that there is a delete button on twitter. As such his blunders are apparent for all to see.
