Who the fuck is Robert Peston?~ Kainosite
Robert Peston is a BBC BAMF. Known by some (as recorded on HIGNFY) as the Fifth rider of the Apocalypse due to his past tendency of heralding perturbing news of fiscal doom and gloom whenever he appeared. He also hates Rupert Murdoch and spent a lot of time as Business Editor covering the phone hacking scandal.
He appears to have somewhat of a cult following judging by the fact that it is possible to purchase Robert Peston t-shirts[1][2].
He also seems to have a following at Vis Comics if this false advert is anything to go by:
Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Pesto is the son of economist and Labour Peer Maurice Peston and his wife Helen. As the son of a peer he is entitled to the courtesy title "The Honourable" but does not use it which is a shame because "The Honourable Pesto" has a ring to it. Pesto attended Highgate Wood Secondary School, in Crouch End, North London, graduated from Balliol College, Oxford with a 2:2 in something in 1982 and then studied at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.
Career[edit | edit source]
Pesto briefly worked as a stockbroker at Williams de Broë, becoming a journalist in 1983 at the Investors Chronicle and joining The Independent newspaper on its launch in 1986. From 1989 to 1990 Pesto worked for the short-lived Sunday Correspondent newspaper as Deputy City Editor, before being appointed City Editor of the Independent on Sunday in 1990.
From 1991 to 2000, he worked for the Financial Times in various business and political roles and set up the FT's investigation unit. He became close friends with fellow journalist, now PR man, Roland Rudd, where the two were known as the "Pest and the Rat". In 2000 he worked for The Telegraph and the Spectator but left The Telegraph for The Sunday Times in 2001 and left The Spectator for New Statesman. In 2002, he joined The Sunday Telegraph as City editor and assistant editor. He became associate editor in 2005.
In late 2005, it was announced that Pesto would become BBC Business Editor, responsible for business and City coverage on the corporation's flagship TV and radio news programmes, the BBC News Channel, its website and on Radio 4's Today. When Pesto first joined the BBC he was sent on a course to iron out his "eccentricities" - which clearly failed[4]. At the BBC he spent a lot of time talking about the financial crisis and hating on James Murdoch much to the delight of fandom. On 17 October 2013, Pesto was appointed Economics Editor of BBC News, replacing Stephanie Flanders.
Pesto has won a number of awards for his journalism and has written a few books too.
Alastair Campbell regularly mimicked Peston's habit of flicking back his hair and once responded to a difficult question with the words: "Another question from the Peston school of smartarse journalism."
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Robert was married to the writer Siân Busby, who died in September 2012 from lung cancer after a long illness. Peston has a son, Maximilian, and a stepson, Simon. After a domestic burglary in December 2012, Robert made an appeal for the return of rings that had belonged to his late wife. Peston has described himself as "culturally Jewish". He supports Arsenal F.C.
