Section 28
From Lolitics Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to searchSection 28 was part of the 1988 Local Goverment Act which stated that:
"[a local authority] shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality"
It was seen as a classic example of social conservativism under Margaret Thatcher, and was met with anger in the LGBT community, in particular because it forbade teachers in state schools from supporting LGBT students who were suffering bullying from their peers due to their sexuality. Matthew Parris and Peter Mandelson were involved in a media campaign against the legislation during the 1980s, though it was not repealed until 2000 under Tony Blair.
