What we are witnessing now is a clash of civilisations, not just between states but within them.~ Pim Fortuyn
Pim Fortuyn was a Dutch politician, activist and academic who was notable for his anti-jihadist (some would say racist) views. He aligned himself on the far-right, but called himself a Socialist. He was assassinated by an animal rights activist in 2002.
Life and Career[edit | edit source]
He was born into a Catholic family, and grew up in Driehuis. He went to the University of Amsterdam to study Sociology, later transferring to the Vrije Uniersiteit (Free University). He began work as a lecturer, and stated that he identified as a Marxist. He joined the Dutch Labour Party, and in 1990 he moved to Rotterdam. After a few years in the People's Party of Freedom and Democracy, he joined Leefbaar Nederland (Livable Netherlands), and was elected lijsttrekker - the top of the party list and de facto leader.
In February 2002, he announced in a controversial interview that he was in favour of ending Muslim immigration into the Netherlands, and was dismissed as lijsttrekker of Livable Netherlands almost immediately. However, he found some support, and began his own Party - LPF (Pim Fortuyn List). Worryingly, his Party was very successful in the Rotterdam district council elections, polling more votes than any other Party.
As the elections loomed, Pim became an increasingly divisive figure, and began to fear for his life. He was assassinated by Volkert van der Graaf, an animal rights activist on the 6 May 2002. In the shocked few weeks that followed, LPF won 17% of the seats in the House of Representatives - the second largest Party. 50% of voters aged 18-30 voted for Pim, post-assassination. Members of LPF gained four Cabinet seats - most notably one for Immigration.
Sexuality[edit | edit source]
Pim was openly gay and brazen about his sexuality, saying that he enjoyed the taste of semen on national television, comparing it to a strong liquor. It is possible that he was guilty of sexual misconduct, with allegations brought forward that he slept with young, underage Moroccans. Other rumours exist of sex parties and sex with his staff.
Portrayal[edit | edit source]
On the Meme[edit | edit source]
On the meme, Pim is characterised as the most dominating, aggressive top in the universe, aside from perhaps Paddy Ashdown. He has been paired with Peter Mandelson,Michael Gove and Nick Clegg and is a bad practionioner of BDSM, breaking his victims down into hollow-eyed shells.
