Best known for looking like a tweenager well into his 30s and fanboying anyone of the left of the political spectrum.
Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Owen was born in Sheffield and he grew up in Stockport, Greater Manchester. His father worked for the local authority and his mother was a lecturer. He describes himself as a "4th generation socialist"; his grandfather was involved with the Communist Party and his parents met as members of the Trotskyist Militant tendency.
He attended Bramhall High School and Ridge Danyers Sixth Form College before going on to read history at University College, Oxford. He graduated with a BA in 2005 and a Master of Studies (MSt) in US history in 2007. Prior to his media career, OJ worked as a trade-union lobbyist and as a parliamentary researcher for left-wing Labour politician John McDonnell.
Career[edit | edit source]
Journalism[edit | edit source]
Owen began his career writing for The Independent and moved to The Guardian in 2014. In 2015 he also began writing for New Statesman.
Most of his writings focus on class issues, in particular how terrible the class system is and various ways we should try and get rid of it.
Books[edit | edit source]
To date, Owen has published two books on. The first, "Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class", was published in 2011 and garnered attention from both the UK and the US. The book helped kick-start Owen's career and he won a number of awards for the piece.
Owen's second book "The Establishment: And How They Get Away With It" was published in 2014 and generally caused less of a stir.
Political Activism[edit | edit source]
As has been previously discussed, Owen is a massive leftie. Despite this, he supports the Labour Party. He supported Jeremy Corbyn in the 2015 Labour leadership election and was not-so-subtly trying to get a job on Corbyn's media team. Unfortunately, Jeremy didn't offer him a job and so Owen has to go back to admiring the beady socialist from afar.
Outside of the Labour Party, Owen has attended rallies on a whole host of issues including economic inequality, LGBT+ rights and government cuts to disability benefits.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Owen is gay and has written about the homophobia he has faced. He "shuns" "identity politics".
When not busy writing or attending protests, Owen can be found on twitter arguing with absolutely everyone. In the of the 2015 Labour leadership election he tried to pick a fight with Alastair Campbell and how the Labour Party should interact with the press and got appropriately schooled.
Portrayal[edit | edit source]
In the Media[edit | edit source]
Everyone is contatantly taking the piss out of him for how young he looks. He was once mistaken for Douglas Carswell's son.
Owen had often come under criticism for his work, in particular for the fact that he's an Oxbridge educated career politico-journalist who talks about "ordinary people" and how everyone is constantly failing them rather than giving "ordinary people" a voice. He has been accused time and again of using other people's experiences and struggles to promote his own career rather than help them[1]. From the right he has been attacked for daring to have dreams and think differently. He's more than likely been told that he'll "grow out of his left wing phase as he gets older" and probably pointed out that actually, he's in his 30s, thank you so very much!
Owen has an ongoing feud with Guido Fawkes. Guido views Owen as a massive hypocrite who bangs on about wanting to help the poor while Owen is a member of the 1% and is himself part of the establishment he claims to fight against. Owen, on the other hand, thinks Guido is a liar who misrepresents everything anyone says and is a member of the establishment that he claims to fight against. Sadly there has not been any fic of the two yet.
In Fanon[edit | edit source]
Fandom tends to like him because he's lefty, snarky, on twitter and has a baby-face. Also people keep inviting him on things as a talking head so he's everywhere all the time.
Meme[edit | edit source]
Despite a number of prompts including him, Owen has yet to appear on the meme in any fics.
