We import 2/3rds of our cheese. That is a disgrace. ~ Elizabeth Truss

Best known for an unfortunate clip which played on Have I Got News For You in which she talked about cheese, China and pork.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Liz's father, John Truss, is a professor of pure mathematics at the University of Leeds; her mother was a nurse, teacher, and member of the CND. Liz has described both as being "to the left of Labour".

Truss attended a state primary school in Paisley, followed by a comprehensive school in north-east Leeds. She also lived in Canada for a year. Amongst her A-levels, Truss studied both Ordinary Maths and Advanced Maths which makes her somewhat of a novelty among Tory MPs because she can add up. She did, however, go down the rather predictable route for politicians by reading PPE and Oxford (Merton College). While at university she was actually a Liberal Democrat and was President of Oxford University Liberal Democrats for a while. In 1994 she spoke in favour of republicanism at Lib Dem conference.

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

After graduation in 1996, she worked for Shell as a commercial manager and Cable & Wireless as economics director, and became a qualified management accountant. This was the same year that she stopped being a Lib Dem and joined the Conservative Party. She later went on to work for Reform, an education charity and lobbying group, advocating more rigorous exams and courses.

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

She served as the chairman of the Lewisham Deptford Conservative Association from 1998 to 2000. She was elected as a councillor in the London Borough of Greenwich in 2006, standing down in 2010, shortly before the end of her term of office.

Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]

She had previously unsuccessfully fought the parliamentary seats of Hemsworth in 2001 and Calder Valley in 2005.

Liz was initially selected for the seat of South West Norfolk but a group in the local Conservative Association (known as the "Turnip Taliban") kicked up a bit of a fuss when it was discovered that she had had an affair with an MP before running for the candidature. For some reason, she failed to mention this at the hustings. The Turnip Taliban brought a motion to the local association to strip her of her candidacy, but they were easily outvoted and Liz went on to win the seat in the 2010 general election.

After she was finally selected as the candidate for the seat, her mother agreed to campaign for her but her father refused to do so because she was running as a Conservative.

During her first few years as an MP she lobbied extensively on behalf of RAF Marham and on other local issues such as the dualling of the A11 west of Thetford and spoke out against the Conservative's plan to sell of forests (since she has a very large one in her constituency). More widely, she was involved in lobbying for the sciences and maths in education policy and on employment regulation.

She quickly rose up the ranks and went from a newly elected MP in 2010 to a Cabinet minister by 2014. Whether this is due to how great she is or how crap the rest of the Conservative party are is an assessment best left to individuals.
