Minister for straight women ~ The Guardian[1]

Best known for being Gove's replacement at Education and then, after voting against same-sex marriage, being made minister for woman and equalities.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Morgan was born in Kingston upon Thames. She grew up in Surbiton and attended the private, fee-paying Surbiton High School before studying Jurisprudence at St Hugh's College, Oxford. Elected Treasurer of the Oxford Union Society, she however failed in her bid for its Presidency. She qualified as a solicitor in 1994 and worked as a corporate lawyer at Travers Smith specialising in mergers and acquisitions before taking on an in-house counsel role advising on corporate law matters.

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

Morgan joined the Conservative Party in 1989 and was the Chair of Wessex Young Conservatives from 1995–97 and Vice-chair, Battersea Conservatives from 1997 to 1999. She fought Islington South and Finsbury in the 2001 General Election.

Morgan was first selected for the Loughborough seat in 2004 and in the 2005 General Election achieved a 5% Labour to Conservatives swing compared to a national average of 3.1%, making Loughborough the most marginal seat in the East Midlands. Morgan was reselected for the Loughborough seat in 2006.

Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]

In the 2010 General Election Morgan was elected as the MP for Loughborough on a swing of 5.5% with a majority of 3,744 votes.[4] She made her maiden speech in a debate on Economic Affairs and Work and Pensions on 8 June 2010.

She held a number of minor posts throughout the 2010 parliament, but really only gained prominence when she was appointed Minister for Women. The Equalities brief (they had previously been together) went to Sajid Javid. This was seen as many as a reaction to Nicky's vote against same-sex marriage. Later on, the briefs were consolidated again and a lot of people were very unhappy about it. Nicky explained that in the two years between the vote and her appointment to minister for equalities she had changed her mind on and that people learn and grow. Naturally many LGBT people were upset and still bring up the vote whenever Nicky does anything to do with equalities, causing her to get very annoyed[2].

When Michael Gove was moved from Education to the Whips' office, Nicky was made Education Secretary despite not really caring about the education department. She was critised by the UK Statistics Authority for misleading parliament. Nicky claimed that, under Labour, 1/3 of children left primary school without knowing how to read or write. As it turned out, 64% of students left primary school achieving expected results in all subjects tested (presumably where Nicky got the statistic) with 91% of 11-year-old pupils tested in May 2010 achieving the level the government says they should in order to be deemed able to read and write.

Nicky was also in facour of higher tuition fees in order to reduce the number of people going to university and when disagreed with she claimed that she managed to pay off all her own university debt in just 8 years so it couldn't actually be all that bad. Because of statements like this, and the fact that 13% of the electorate in her constituency for the 2015 general election were students, no one really expected Nicky to be back for the 2015 parliament. However she actually won a bigger swing in her constituency than the party did nationally which confused a lot of people.
