...when the spokesman needs a spokesman, it's time to move on.~ Andy Coulson's resignation speech

Best known for being Cameron's right hand man and his involvement in the Phone Hacking Scandal

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Coulson grew up in Wickford, Essex. He attended Beauchamps High School, a secondary school and sixth form college, from 1979 to 1986

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

Coulson started work at 18 as a junior reporter on the Basildon Echo. In 1988, he moved to The Sun, working with Piers Morgan on the showbiz column. In 1994, he briefly moved to the Daily Mail, but after nine weeks moved back to The Sun.

He set up the website page3.com, which was the first of News International's websites to make a profit.

He became deputy editor of the News of the World in 2000, replacing Rebekah Brooks as editor in 2003.

In 2001, in the run up to the general election, he asked Tony and Cherie Blair whether they were members of the mile high club.

In 1997 he did this:

Fandom is still not sure why.

Special Adviser[edit | edit source]

Coulson became the Conservative Party's head of communications on 9 July 2007. It was rumoured that Rebekah Brooks persuaded Cameron to hire Coulson in exchange for favourable coverage from the Murdoch press.

Following the 2010 general election Coulson was appointed David Cameron's Director of Communications at 10 Downing Street in May of that year. His pay was £140,000, the highest paid special advisor. It was later discovered that Coulson had not been subject to the same vetting process and almost literally every other top flight civil servant had but was just waved through as an appointment. It was further revealed that while he was working for David Cameron, Coulso was still getting paid by The News of the World.

Coulson announced his resignation on 21 January 2011, citing the increased accusations of his involvement in phone hacking distracting him from his job at Number 10.

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Coulson married his wife, Eloise, in 2000. He is, unfortunately, a Tottenham Hotspur fan.

In October 2013, it was revealed that Coulson had had an affair with Rebekah Brooks that lasted from 1998 to 2007.

Scandals[edit | edit source]

Phone Hacking[edit | edit source]

Andy Coulson was heavily involved in the Phone Hacking Scandal.

Coulson's trial started in October 2013. and he was found guilty of one charge of conspiracy to intercept voicemails in June 2014. He was sentenced to 18 months in prison on 4 July. On 21 November 2014, Coulson was released from prison having served less than five months of his 18-month prison sentence.

Perjury[edit | edit source]

Coulson was charge with having committed perjury during the trial in 2010 of Tommy and Gail Sheridan. He was acquitted because the judge of the perjury trial ruled that even if Coulson had lied, it didn't matter because Coulson's evidence wasn't relevant enough to the initial case. Coulson was pretty happy with that outcome.

Afterwards[edit | edit source]

Once the dust had settle and everyone was too busy focusing on things like Brexit Andy got appointed to head up public relations at The Telegraph - in particular, promoting the paper as being truthful and authoritative[1].

Portrayal[edit | edit source]

In the Media[edit | edit source]

Generally portrayed as a scheming and Machiavellian character, the left-wing press have a particular dislike for him.

In Fanon[edit | edit source]

More loved in Fanon than in the media although again opinion is split as to whether he's truly evil or not.

Meme[edit | edit source]

Coulson has generally appeared in shippy slashfic, although has made an appearance in cracktastic Leveson Inquiry fic.

Shipping[edit | edit source]
