George "Gideon" Osborne, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, is a controversial figure in the fandom. His main detractors say he is nowt but a posh and useless Toryboy, his admirers retort that his wrists alone justify his existence. Fanboy/girling is guaranteed by the community's pretty-much constant reference to him as "Gids", a nickname that reveals instant swathes of cuteness in the Chancellor. (He changed his name from Gideon to George when he was 13; fandom refuses to believe it, because, come on, which has more awesome?)

Babyfaced cuteness and a fairly high voice have their inevitable effect in a nearly fandom-wide consensus about his, er, not being on top all that much.

Some loliticians have speculated that he tastes like profiteroles.

His blackberry ringtone is 'Boys Boys Boys' by Lady Gaga.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Baby George with his parents Felicity and Peter - no, not that Peter

Originally named Gideon Oliver, he changed his name to George when he was 13. In an interview in July 2005, Osborne said: "It was my small act of rebellion. I never liked it. When I finally told my mother she said, 'Nor do I'. So I decided to be George after my grandfather, who was a war hero. Life was easier as a George; it was a straightforward name."

Osborne was educated at independent schools: Norland Place School, Colet Court and St Paul's School.

He was given a demyship to Magdalen College, University of Oxford, where he received a 2:1 bachelor's degree in Modern History. While at university he was a member of the Bullingdon Club and had curly, floppy hair, as shown in the gallery below.

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

Tried to be journalist; ended up folding towels.

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

Conservative Research Department in 1994 and became head of its Political Section. One of his first roles was to go to Blackpool and observe the October 1994 Labour Conference.

Between 1997 and 2001, he worked for then Conservative leader William Hague as a speechwriter and Political Secretary. In this role he helped prepare Hague for the weekly session of Prime minister's questions, often playing the role of Prime Minister Tony Blair. Under the successive leaderships of Michael Howard and David Cameron he remained on the Prime Minister's Questions team.

Giving loliticians worldwide a wrist kink

Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]

Elected as the Member of Parliament for Tatton, Cheshire, in June 2001.

In September 2004, Osborne was appointed by Michael Howard to the Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Following the 2005 general election, he was promoted to Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer at the young age of 33 by the then-Conservative Party leader Michael Howard. Osborne served as campaign manager for David Cameron's leadership campaign in 2005, and kept the Shadow Chancellor's post when Cameron became leader later that year.

Pre-Coalition[edit | edit source]

He had been one of David Cameron's most constant companions through the years, so it's easy to assume there's been a bit of touching outside PMQs. George is considered to be the main Clegg rival to the glory which is bonking the PM. (No one tell them they should combine forces. I don't think Dave will be able to take it.)

In Coalition[edit | edit source]

With the arrival of Nick Clegg taking the role of DCam's right-hand man, Gids was not given the Deputy Prime Minister role he so richly deserved, being as the position was created for a person to have the least amount of power in Cabinet without realising it themselves. Instead, Gids is now in charge of money, which is something he doesn't really understand. (See references to him being lent a calculator, taught to add up, etc.)

Post-Coaltiion[edit | edit source]

George received the title of "First Secretary of the State" following William Hague's departure. Coincidentally, Peter Mandelson once held the title.

With David Cameron's announcement that he would not seek to be leader for a further parliament[1], many speculated as to whether George would stand in a future leadership election within the party. His conduct in the 2015 parliament was likely to impact that decision. Then the 2016 EU Referendum happened and everything changed.

In the end he didn't and after a series of ups and downs, Theresa May became leader of the party. Although Osborne offered to stay on as Chancellor for the good of the party and country [2], May sacked him by announcing his replacement to the press before even talking to him.

Osborne has not let being downgraded to a backbencher interfere with being a high profile individual - earning him the nickname George "Six Jobs" Osborne. These jobs include:

  • being a speaker at the Washington Speaker's Bureau
  • chairman of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership
  • advisor to the American fund management firm Blackrock
  • fellow at the McCain Institute[3]
  • editor of London's Evening Standard newspaper
  • MP for Tatton

In fact people were so concerned about Osborne having all these jobs that the Speaker even allowed an Urgent Question on it - making sure to reminder the Commons that the UQ was about the ministerial code and NOT about Osborne's conduct as an individual - honest[4].

On 19 April 2017 The Evening Standard announced that George would not be standing for re-election in the spur of the moment general election campaign. People were SHOCKED that the newspaper he edits would get such a great scoop ahead of everyone else - shocked I tell you!

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

Married to author Frances Osborne with whom he has two children, a dog and a cat.

Scandals[edit | edit source]

From his baby laugh and chocolate coin addiction, the general public could be forgiven for believing that George is naught but a sweet innocent child. But there is more to the Osborne than meets the eye.

Corfugate[edit | edit source]

In 2008 he accepted an invitation from Oleg Deripaska aboard his yacht in Corfu, the theme of the party being 'who can beg the prettiest for money'. On board the yacht he bumped into the Lord of Darkness and shared a few snarky jokes about Gordon Brown and David Davis. Cue much press smearing and fascinating revelations regarding his tastes in drugs, hookers, and kinky underwear. Possibly the most damaging of the revelations to his reputation was the claim that he was sexually inexperienced and "a bit fumbly" - although this fact was greedily received by the fen. Since Corfugate Lord Mandy has delighted in continuing to bait "Boy George" (as he affectionately calls him) in the press, devoting entire releases to his incompetency, and even performing songs about him at Labour Conferences. Of the scandal, Gids could only comment, "I got on a boat with Peter Mandelson and I won't be doing that again."

The Paralympics[edit | edit source]

When London hosted the 2012 Paralympics Osborne attended to help hand out some awards. The audience at the time were not exactly impressed with him given the cuts that the government had been making to disability services up to that point...

In time honoured fandom tradition, this led to angst!fic.

Natalie Rowe[edit | edit source]

Natalie Rowe is a former dominatrix who knew Osborne when he was young and working for William Hague.

Rower claims that the two of them took cocaine together and that Osborne was fascinating with all things BDSM. ALLEGEDLY, his safeword was "Louise"[5]. This has, obviously, bled over into fic and fandom's interpretation of Osborne.

Whether or not Natalie Rowe's claims are true, she has provided the fandom with great fic fodder and a few hilarious pictures of Osborne in his 20s, for which we will be forever thankful.

Relationships with Other Members[edit | edit source]

George is known to cavort with the Lord of Darkness on boats (see above), and when he isn't being felt up by a Lord, he can be often found eating chocolate coins in his desk, "delegating" his work to his underling Danny when he was in coalition, and making baby laughs in the HoC. He is also still in mourning after the loss of his first underling David Laws who in addition to being small and cute, was also the brains behind the operation.

Sexuality/Appearance/Ideology[edit | edit source]

Portrayal[edit | edit source]

In the Media[edit | edit source]

Media tends to see Osborne as more scheming and competent than fandom generally does. Until, that is, he decides to blame the fact that the economy is shrinking on the weather. Repeatedly. In a single interview.

In Culture[edit | edit source]

Not favourably depicted, particularly by people such as Steve Bell.

In Fanon[edit | edit source]

The Chocolate Coins Initiative[edit | edit source]

Early on in the fandom, an enterprising lolitician suggested that since George's birthday was coming up, we might send him a little something. Chocolate coins were the present of choice, celebrating his Chancellor appointment. These were duly sent from across the UK and presumably resulted in some interesting comments by George's staff.

Or, like, he invested it back into the economy and soon Danny will have to have the "chocolate isn't money" talk with him.

Meme[edit | edit source]

Characterisation varies, from wide-eyed child to evil scheming mastermind.

Shipping[edit | edit source]

Commonly shipped with Peter Mandelson (Mandelborne), David Cameron and Nick Clegg.

Prominent Portrayals in AUs[edit | edit source]

Has appeared in Forumverse and Steampunk AU.

The RP[edit | edit source]

George appeared in the RP briefly under a number of different user names. He was in a relationship with Peter Mandelson which he ended upon discovering that his partner was a werewolf. Following Peter's cure, George tried to restart the relationship but to no avail.
