Nick Clegg answering questions at DPMQs

Overview[edit | edit source]

Deputy Prime Minister's Questions (DPMQs) took place on the fourth Tuesday of every month[1]. It was an occasion for MPs to question the Deputy Prime Minister on his role, his actions and the actions of the government. Most of the time was spent attack the Liberal Democrats for going into coalition with the Conservatives.

Misconceptions[edit | edit source]

Sometimes people refer to Prime Minister's Questions when the Deputy Prime Minister replies for the government as DPMQs but this it technically incorrect.

History[edit | edit source]

DPMQs was set up due to the formation of the Convervative-Liberal Democrat coalition following the 2010 general election. It was designed to enable the two parties to answer separately for their actions while in government[2]. This caused a number of problems for Labour, who were in opposition at the time, because their deputy leader Harriet Harman was acting as leader due to Gordon Brown stepping down as leader after the election. It all worked out in the end and DPMQs became a regular monthly feature.

Since the end of the coalition government in 2015, DPMQs has ceased to exist much to the delight of PETER BONE!!!.
