He’s the No. 2 of British politics, the subject of more effigies than Guy Fawkes would have been had he got sent off for England in a World Cup, and a parent trying to hold together the Lib-Con family. ~ ShortList.com

Nick Clegg is a former leader of the Liberal Democrats and former deputy prime minister. He rose to fame through the first ever televised election debates during the 2010 General Election and enjoyed a period of "Cleggmania", before forming the first post-war coalition government with the Conservatives. He was thereafter despised by those on the right and left - but especially the left.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Teenage Nick Clegg's love poerty[1]

Nick Clegg was born in Buckinghamshire to a wealthy family. He has two brothers and one sister, and is the third child out of the four. His father, Nicholas Clegg is the chairman of a bank. His mother, Hermance van den Wall Bake, is Dutch and as a girl was imprisoned by the Japanese in Jakarta. Nick has said that his mother greatly influenced his views, giving him a degree of scepticism about the British class system and that his mixed heritage is part of the reason he is a liberal.

Through his father's side, he is descended from Russian aristocracy. His great-great-grandfather, Ignaty Zakrevsky was attorney general of the Imperial Russian Senate and his grandmother was the daughter of a baron, who fled the Russian Revolution.

He attended Westminster School in central London and took Social Anthropology at the University of Cambridge. He later studied at the University of Minnesota and the Collège d'Europe, where he met his wife.

When he was a teenager her liked to write poetry and it was truly awful. He also liked to burn cacti while drunk in Germany[2].

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

If applicable.

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

He was a SpAd and an MEP for a while.

Parliamentary Career[edit | edit source]

2015 General Election[edit | edit source]

Nick led the Liberal Democrats into the 2015 general election. The party fell back to just 8 seats with a lot of Nick's closest friends losing their seats.

Although Clegg remained an MP (mostly through Tories voting tactically to keep Labour out), he stood down as party leader following the party's defeat.

Since there was no more coalition, he was no longer Deputy Prime Minister and so he got banned from Russia[3].

Personal Life[edit | edit source]

He is married with children.

Sexuality[edit | edit source]

He has claimed to have slept with "no more than 30" women[4]. Fandom does not believe this.

Portrayal[edit | edit source]

In the Media[edit | edit source]

Particularly in the early days of the coalition, Nick has been sketched by cartoonists as a puppet (Steve Bell), a doormat, a dog, and to the fandom's delight, David Cameron's bride. Cartoonists have also noted that Nick Clegg's face is pretty difficult to caricature which has probably saved him from a lot worse things being drawn.

In Culture[edit | edit source]

Nick Clegg.TuitionFees.jpg

The musical "Nicked" portrays the first year of the coalition government from Nick Clegg's perspective. Nick is played by the actor Jason Langley.

During the tuition fees debacle students wrote a song about Nick, which goes as follows:

Cleggy is a Tory,
He wears a Tory hat,
And when he saw tuition fees,
He said "I'll treble that!"

That's the polite verse. You can imagine the others.

In Fanon[edit | edit source]

One of the greatest causes that he supports is, of course, the biscuit. So far we know he strongly supports the jammy dodger and pink panther wafers. He is also for rich teas when they are dunked but for Hob Nobs when they are not.

On a not-quite-biscuit note, he seems to have some kind of affiliation with Jaffa Cakes, but no one is quite sure of the true nature of the relationship. Is he just an innocent Jaffa Cake aficionado, does he have friends who work in the Jaffa Cake industry, or is there something more sinister going on?

He once removed the Orangey Bit from a Jaffa Cake, despite Lord Mandy declaring such a feat impossible. There is also some evidence that he enjoys Minstrels, though in what capacity loliticians are unsure.

Shipping[edit | edit source]

Most frequently shipped with David Cameron (Clameron).
