...like a beautiful diamond, glowing like the fiery embers of a shard of Rhondda coal~ The Sun Nation[1]

Best known for being Welsh and kicking Farage's arse at the ITV leaders' debate in 2015. Also she got kicked out of the Welsh Assembly one time for calling the Queen "Mrs Windsor" since Leanne Wood is a republican.

Life and Career[edit | edit source]

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Leanne was born in the Rhondda (Wales) to Jeff and Avril Wood. She grew up in Penygraig (Wales) where she attended Tonypandy Comprehensive School, and went to the University of Glamorgan (in Wales).

Pre-political Career[edit | edit source]

Before entering politics Leanne worked as a probation officer (in Wales.)

Early Political Career[edit | edit source]

Leanne joined Plaid Cymru – the Party of Wales in 1991, presumably because Welsh Labour was insufficiently Welsh. She served as a councillor on Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council from 1995 to 1999. She was a researcher for Plaid's MEP Jill Evans from 2000 to 2001.

Assembly Career[edit | edit source]

Leanne was finally elected to the Welsh Assembly in 2003 after unsuccessfully standing in 1997 and 2001.

Leadership[edit | edit source]

Leanne was elected leader of Plaid Cymru in 2012. She's the first leader of the party not to be a native Welsh speaker, but she's learning the language as she goes.

The Leanneslide[edit | edit source]

Leanne has long felt that for Plaid to be competitive at a national level it needs to reach out from its northern, Welsh-speaking heartlands and start winning Labour seats in the Valleys. As a Valleys girl and Welsh learner Leanne embodies the sort of voter she wants to win over, and the idea of expanding the party beyond its traditional base was central to her leadership campaign. Always one to lead from the front, in 2016 she stood in her native Rhondda, albeit with a safety net in the form of Plaid Cymru's regional list.

Everyone expected this to be a brave but doomed gesture, along the lines of the Charge of the Light Brigade. Plaid had narrowly won the seat in the first Assembly elections, but Labour took it in 2003 and the popular Labour AM Leighton Andrews was sitting on a majority of almost 7,000 votes. Leanne had stood for the Westminster seat before and been thoroughly trounced, and her prospects didn't look much better this time round.

But in the biggest upset of the 2016 Welsh elections, Leanne won the seat with a colossal 24% swing, racking up a majority of 3,459 votes. For the first time she was returned to the Assembly on a constituency rather than a list vote.

Every job they've ever held as an MP or Lord, from a lowly PPS to Prime Minister. You don't have to include committees, but you should include committee chairmanships. For modern MPs this information can be easily gathered from The Public Whip, but doing so is about as exciting as watching paint dry, so if you don't feel like it just leave the table for someone to fill in later.

If they've only ever been a backbencher, you can delete the table.
